National Cathedral and more

A set of photographs I took today when I went to the Flower Mart at the National Cathedral.  I have to admit that this Flower Mart does not have quite the same character as the Baltimore Flower Mart, and I didn't see a single peppermint stick.  But I did get some good pictures.

This set, that displays both the grandeur architecture and the grandeur nature, includes the photographs I took at the Cathedral and on my walk home.

Click on the image below to see the photographs, and then click on the "show info" link that appears at the top of the slideshow to see the photo descriptions.

Architecture or Sculpture

A video from The Guardian about the ArcelorMittal Orbit, recently constructed in London to mark the 2012 Olympics. The 377 ft tall tower was designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond. Kapoor is best know in the United States for the Bean in Chicago's Millennium Park.

The Shaw Memorial

A set of Photographs of sculpture by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Several photos are of the plaster version of the The Robert Gould Shaw and Massachusetts 54th Regiment Memorial located in the National Gallery of Art. Other sculptures included in the set are The Pilgrim in Philadelphia and The Farragut Memorial and the General William Tecumseh Sherman both in New York City.

I still need to get photographs of the Adams Memorial in Rock Creek Cemetery.

Who Lives Here

This year's special exhibition at the U.S. Botanical Garden is called "Who Lives Here". Here is a set a photographs I took there earlier today. Everything in the exhibition—except the trains—is created from plant material by a company in Kentucky called Applied Imagination.

These photographs do not really do justice to the amount of detail included in each construction. You have to go there in person to fully appreciate these.

I have posted some photos of the exhibition in past years: 2009 & 2006

If you click the "Show Info" at the top of the slide show, you will see the title of each one.

Lady LIberty Turns 125

The Denver Post's Plog has a set of over 100 photographs covering the the Statue of Liberty's history, beginning with it's construction by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi's, up through yesterday's anniversary of President Grover Cleveland's dedication of the statue on October 28, 1886.

Justice Douglas with Hat

A new photograph added to my Monuments set. This bust of Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas is located near the C&O Canal terminus in Georgetown. The sculpture is by Wendy Ross, but the straw hat was added by someone last weekend. This bust is normally hatless.

Douglas is memorialized here because of his effort in the 1950's to preserve the canal. If not for Douglas the canal would probably have been obliterated, and replaced by a highway.

Museo Subacuático de Arte

Some photographs and a video of Jason deCaires Taylor's Museo Subacuático de Arte. Large concrete sculptures submerged off the coast of Mexico, with the dual purposes of providing a place for new coral reefs to grow, and reducing damage to natural reefs by luring tourist away from them. It is planned to eventually contain over 400 permanent life-size sculptures.

Glenna Goodacre - Clay Masher

In the two weeks I have photographed two of the most important works by the American sculptor Glenna Goodacre. I have created a set that include photographs of both the Vietnam Women's Memorial, part of the Vietnam War Memorial on the National Mall, and The Irish Memorial, located at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia. Below the link to the photos, I have included the documentary Clay Masher. In the film she discussing both of the works I have photographed, as well as her work creating the image of Sacagawea that appears on the one dollar coin.

Philadelphia

A few downtown Philadelphia photographs from last weekend, mostly buildings and sculptures. Independence Hall is currently encased in scaffolding so I did not take any photographs of it.

Flooding at the Fairmount Water Works

I was in Philadelphia last Friday and went to Fairmount Park on the Schuylkill River. This was just as a tropical rain—dropping over 10 inches of water upstream—was ending. The dam at the Fairmount Water Works usually has a fairly gentle water fall, but when I was there the water was gushing over the dam, flooding the water works and creating quite a mess. It is hard to capture in photographs how dramatic the scene was, particularly since the way the place is built you can stand right at the edge of the dam and look straight down into it. Here are some pictures of the flooding and some other scenes around the park.

Embrace of Life

After my last post I wanted something a little more uplifting, so here is a video of the Vigeland Sculpture Park. Just about all of Gustav Vigeland's work remains in Norway, so it is impossible to see it anywhere else. There is a large coffee table book with pictures of his sculptures titled Embrace of life, which is where I am familiar with his work from. The first minute or so of this video is just directions to get to the park, but after that there are some great shots of the sculptures in the Park.

Anish Kapoor's latest work

A video from the BBC about Anish Kapoor's latest work,Temenos, in Middlesbrough, UK. Only time will tell if this ever becomes as popular as Kapoor's Chicago sculpture Cloud Gate, which is now affectionately know as the Bean.
